Wood River Wetland in the Klamath Basin is part of a system of Wildlife Refuges and wetlands located in the Klamath Basin. This is the heart of the Pacific Flyway: Klamath Basin sustains over 430 species of resident and migratory birds, including bald eagles, sandhill cranes and pelicans. The southern half of Klamath Lake supports Bald Eagles year round. Howard Bay on Klamath Lake is home to nesting Blue Herons, Pelicans and Snow Geese. Klamath Lake is the largest body of fresh water in Oregon, covering an expanse of 133 square miles.

Once when driving along Klamath Lake I witnessed a flock of pelicans flying in perfect unison, the motion of their wings beating to harmony I could not hear, but could only see in the beauty of their flight. I pulled off to the side of the road to partake in the only way I could, I watched.
